1978 Moto
Guzzi Lemans 1 - SOLD
Professionally restored by Pro Italia of Glendale, CA in
1997/98.
I purchased
this bike from the widow of a friend in 1996. It was in good
overall condition, with 20,752 miles on it, but was starting to
look a little tired cosmetically, particularly the matte black
frame and exhaust. I wanted to restore it and address the
cosmetics as well as upgrading a few mechanicals.
Pro Italia
was one of the premier Italian bike dealerships at that time and
was run and staffed by true enthusiasts. I approached Earl
Campbell (GM at that time) about taking on the project. As our
discussion evolved Earl became more enthusiastic about doing the
project, as we both seemed to have the same vision for the
result. My directive was to build the best bike we could,
without losing the original character of the bike. Once I
assured Earl that I was willing to spend what was necessary to
do that, and wait as long as necessary, we agreed to set the
wheels in motion. I could not have been happier with the
result. All the right things were done, by all the right
people.
I rode the
bike occasionally for the next 2 or 3 years, putting about 1,200
miles on it, then prepped it for storage in my collection. I
couldn’t decide if it was too nice to ride or too nice not to,
but I had other bikes to ride. Today the bike looks as good as
it did the day it left Pro Italia.
I am now
preparing for retirement and have decided it’s time to let
someone else enjoy this bike. I’ve just finished
re-commissioning the bike and it is ready to ride. A new
Odyssey battery has been installed, brakes (de-linked) have
fresh fluid and have been bled, fresh oil, etc. I will note
that the tires look good, with only 1,200 miles on them, but
should be replaced, based on age. The bike fired up easily and
settled into an idle after maybe a minute of warm-up.
OK, now for
some details
This was a
frame-up / crankshaft out resto. Everything was rebuilt or
replaced.

There are
numerous other small items, but I’m sure you get the idea. New
owner will get the original receipts from Pro Italia, totaling
over $12,000 in 1998. That’s equal to over $19,000 in today’s
money, and it would be hard to find someone to do the job to the
same level of expertise and craftsmanship.
Bike is
located in Las Vegas, NV 89103, with a clean Nevada title in my
name.
