Variations in number stampings on Ducati singles - Brian Brown | ||||||||||
(1) The engine number will have a large asterisk (8 radial lines) at the beginning and end of the number. | ||||||||||
(2) The engine number will have DM (Ducati Meccanica) with an oval around it at the beginning and end of the number. | ||||||||||
(3) The engine number will be stamped into one case half and DM with the displacement will be stamped into the other half. | ||||||||||
(a) The frame number will have a star at the beginning and end of the number, sometimes this style will also be preceded by DM and the displacement, and some had the number followed by IGM 100X-OM or GM100X-OM. (the X changes with the year of the bike?) | ||||||||||
(b) The frame number will have DM inside an oval at the beginning and end of the number. | ||||||||||
Bikes made for the US market distributed by Berliner had no frame number stamped into them, only a sticker on the headstock that displayed the motor number as the frame number. This foil often disappeared with time. Only these US bikes have a frame number that matches the motor number. | ||||||||||
Generally 4 speed singles have the model designation on the right hand crankcase half. Five speed models have the model designation on the left hand crankcase half. | ||||||||||
